Concert: ‘The musical Istanbul of the XIXth Century’
February 4th at 7 pm

Lâmekân Ensemble is an internationally renowned sextet which invites the Turkish and European public to (re)discover the classic Ottoman music. The program focuses on the Istanbul of the 19th Century.
For the program Lâmekân Ensemble gathers some of the finest young virtuoso’s specialized in Ottoman music. Focusing on late 18th Century and 19th Century vocal and instrumental repertoires, the ensemble revisits the musical centers – mekanlar – of old Istanbul, where urban classical music was expressed through different cultural spheres. Thus, Lâmekân Ensemble takes the listener to a chronological journey from the palace and the Sufi monasteries (mevlevihane) to the 19th Century taverns, playing masterpieces by composers such as Numan Ağa, Arif Mehmed Ağa, Zekai Dede, Hamparsum, Osman Bey, Hacı Arif bey and Tatyos Efendi.

Lâmekân Ensemble

Founded in 2011 by Belgian ud player and musicologist Tristan Driessens. The ensemble gave concerts in BOZAR Brussels, Philharmonie de Liège, Bağlarbaşı Kültür Merkezi, Albert Long Hall… performing with the finest representatives of classical Ottoman music, including Derya Türkan, Necati Celik, Burcu Karadağ and Murat Aydemir. In 2015, Lâmekân Ensemble was invited to officially represent Turkey at the prestigious International Mugham festival of Azerbaijan. Their first critically acclaimed album ‘Garden of Fidelity – Music of the Ottoman Court’ was published in 2014 (M&MT, Istanbul) and was successful both in Turkey and Europe.
