The Villa Empain, masterpiece of Brussels Art Deco
With Cécile Dubois
Thursday 4 April 2019, at 7 pm
In the framework of the Flamboyant exhibition, Cécile Dubois will discuss the relationships between clients and architects in the Brussels Art Deco milieu. She will specifically expand on the link between Louis Empain and “his” architects, particularly Michel Polak and Antoine Courtens, who both designed very different projects, including the sumptuous Villa Empain.
With a degree in History from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Cécile Dubois is a guide speaker and helped organise the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Biennale developed by Voir et Dire Bruxelles. She finds the architecture of the interwar period enchanting for its diversity and original forms, and it is one of her favourite subjects. She is president of the Brussels Art Deco Society asbl, which she founded in 2016. She is the author of Bruxelles Art Déco, which includes seven guided walks in Brussels to discover the many facets of Art Deco and Modernism in the city. She also wrote Bruxelles Art Nouveau and contributed to the visitor’s guide to the Flamboyant exhibition.
