Villa Liminal

Artist Marcos Lutyens’s practice focuses on the use of hypnosis to engage the visitor’s embodied experience of art.
Villa Liminal is a research project conceived in the framework of the public program Embassy of Uncertain Shores. For this first iteration of the project, Lutyens invites the participating audience of the Boghossian Foundation to a performative session of collective hypnosis, to experience liminality, a state of disorientation between consciousness and unconsciousness.

Villa Limunal

The interstitial sites of Embassy of Uncertain Shores which are explored by Lutyens are physical such as how a shore is the border between land and sea, or perhaps these between-spaces are more to do with a passing ritual or coming of age. Through a liminal approach the participants will be immersed into a kind of initiatory rite that encompasses the macro as well as the internal, the political as well as psychological.

The evening program at Boghossian Foundation follows a workshop conducted by the artist involving students at the Sint Lukas School of Arts in Brussels, during which they will lay the groundwork for future iterations of the Villa Liminal project.

About Marcos Lutyens

Artist Marcos Lutyens’s practice focusses on the use of hypnosis to engage the visitor’s embodied experience of art, while also involving various parallel approaches to explore group and individual consciousness. Exhibitions of infinite scale and nature have been installed in the minds of visitors. His investigations have included research with social groups such as the third-gender Muxhe, Raeilians, synaesthetes, border migrants, space engineers and mental architects to explore how unconscious mind-sets shift across cultures and backgrounds. Building on his investigations into consciousness and social dynamics, Lutyens has developed projects that involve our external surroundings.
Lutyens has exhibited in international exhibitions such as documenta in Kassel and the Istanbul Biennale and is preparing projects for 2017 including at the Guggenheim, NYC.
