‘La mer: Liberté’ consists of 9 modules in ceramics, which attest to the artists virtuosity in the handling of colors. Alternating between several transparent and opaque layers of ceramics, Félicien Umbreit obtains the intricate colors that can be seen in this piece made as part of his master in ceramics at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels of La Cambre.

Félicien Umbreit looks for a way to express the insatiable human desire for freedom in a time of hustle, pressure, and hurry, and he uses water in a way to symbolize this. Water clearly expresses this unsaturated movement, but on the other hand, it also has a purifying power, and it can offer new life and rest to those who seem to have lost their strength.

Félicien Umbreit is a laureate of the Boghossian Foundation Prize in 2021.
