‘Plan pour une statue équestre’ is part of a series of ‘architectural plans’ in scagliola (a plaster technique to imitate marble). The works in this series are ironic, a parody on the nationalism in architecture and art that Moriyama encountered when cycling through Brussels during his residency at the Boghossian Foundation. In this work too, we only see the shadow of an equestrian statue, but never the identity behind it. The rich marble surface is also a form of optical illusion.

Lucian Moriyama was artist in residence at the Boghossian Foundation in 2021.
