Aleppo, conservation and new technologies

As part of the exhibition Aleppo, a 5,000 year journey, the Boghossian Foundation invites Yves Ubelmann to take us behind the scenes of this exceptional project in a lecture to be broadcast on line in real time, directly from the Villa Empain.

This immersive and exclusively digital exhibition dedicated to Aleppo, designed by the teams of Iconem, reveals several major monuments of the millennial city.

Iconem founder Yves Ubelmann will review the history of multi-millennial Aleppo and take us to the city today, with its martyred vestiges of Syrian architecture. Illustrated with numerous pictures taken in the city, the lecture will give us the background to the creation of the films projected in the exhibition and introduce us to the tools available today for conserving endangered sites.

The conversation will be led by journalist Soraya Amrani.

Founded in 2013 by Yves Ubelmann, Iconem contributes to the conservation and promotion of endangered heritage, by digitalising it for further exploration and study. His team works across the globe, bringing together additional technologies in order to adapt to all terrains – using photogrammetry, laser scanning, and large-scale scanning via drones. Executing 3D photorealist models of our heritage’s most precious sites helps both ensure their protection and communicate them to a larger audience.

Over the past few years, Iconem has designed digital exhibitions such as Cités millénaires, at the Arab World Institute, Paris, 2018 and From Mossoul to Palmyra, A Virtual Journey through the World’s Cultural Heritage, at Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, 2019. These immersive experiences help give the public access to exceptional heritage sites.
