Lecture | U.S.-China Confrontation

Is a US-China confrontation inevitable? While the eyes of the world are riveted on the war in Ukraine, Washington and Beijing are at loggerheads on a wide range of issues, both at regional and global level. Their rivalry seems to be shaping the future of the international system. The central issue in this conflict, which smacks of a “new Cold War”, is the fate of Taiwan, coveted by Beijing but supported by Washington. Is there an alternative to war between the world’s two major powers?

Pierre Grosser is a historian of international relations. A graduate of Sciences Po, he is an associate professor of history on secondment to the Institut de Sciences Politiques, where he teaches at the School of International Affairs. He is a member of the Centre d’histoire at Sciences Po, but previously taught at Georgetown University and the Université de Québec à Montréal, as well as at the Université de Montréal and the Université Laval. A former Director of Studies at the Diplomatic Institute of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pierre Grosser’s research focuses on security and defence issues, as well as contemporary challenges. World War II, colonialism and the Cold War are among his specialities, not forgetting peace and contemporary Asia, where he has spent a great deal of time. He is the author of several books, including L’autre guerre froide. La confrontation Etats-Unis/Chine, CNRS Editions, March 2023 and editor of the collective work L’Histoire mondiale des relations internationales, Bouquins, 2023, published on 19 October 2023.
