Is Lebanon a failed state?

Lebanon has a new government, but the country is falling deeper into crisis. On the 22nd of November, the day the country famed for its cedar trees should be celebrating its independence, Lebanese people are struggling to have faith in their future. Why has Lebanon not been able to break free from this spiral of chaos? Is Lebanon a failed state? Historian Jihane Sfeir, chair of the Arab world at the Institute for European Studies at the ULB in Brussels, will speak about these issues during an evening lecture with Gaïdz Minassian.

Jihane Sfeir is a historian, lecturer and researcher at the Université libre de Bruxelles. She is the founder and manager of the Observatoire des Mondes Arabe et Musulman de la Maison des Sciences Humaines (Observatory of the Arab and Muslim World at the House of Social Sciences). As a specialist on the contemporary Arab world, she is attached to the REPI (Research in Teaching and International Politics) and teaches contemporary history of the Arab world, the Ottoman empire and European-Arab world relations. Her research and publications cover Palestinian refugees, as well as the role of archives, history and memory in the Arab world, with a special focus on Lebanon and its civil war. She is the author of several works including L’exil palestinien au Liban : le temps des origines 1947-1952 (Palestinian exile in Lebanon: the time of origins 1947-1952) (Beirut/Paris, IFPO/Karthala, 2008) as well as La liberté académique : principes, enjeux et menaces (Academic Liberty: principles, issues and threats) (Brussels, Presses de l’Université libre de Bruxelles, 2020) co-written with Vanessa Frangville, Aude Merlin and P-E. Vandamme.

Gaïdz Minassian is a journalist at Le Monde and lecturer at Sciences Po Paris.
