Armenian Genocide: Who was Talaat Pasha?

Associate Professor and Australian Research Council Fellow (2014-2018) at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Hans-Lukas Kieser is a historian specialising in the Late Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, as well as the interactions between the Levant and the transatlantic world. A visiting professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2008 and at Stanford University, Palo Alto, in 2010, Hans-Lukas was a visiting scholar at Bilgi University in Istanbul in 2006 and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris in 2004. He also taught at the University of Freiburg (Germany) in 2008-09 and at the University of Bamberg in 2005-06. He received several academic awards, in Zurich (Fonds zur Förderung des akademischen Nachwuchses) and in Basel (Freie Akademische Gesellschaft, Max Geldner Foundation), as well as of the Swiss National Science Foundation. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and several books, including the biography of Talaat Pacha, CNRS Editions, 2023, and has just published his latest book on the Treaty of Lausanne, When Democracy Died: The Middles East’s Enduring Peace of Lausanne, Cambridge U. Press, 2023.
