The Light House
From 29 October 2020 to 31 January 2021

“A light here required a shadow there.”
To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf

From the most ancestral religious objects to contemporary artworks, light fascinates us with its spiritual dimension. It is through light that living beings relate to the world.

Entitled The Light House, the exhibition examines different manifestations of light, through numerous installations and contemporary sculptures.

The Light House invites the visitor to an initial circuit inside the Villa Empain, for an exhibition bringing together the works of twelve artists, shown in twelve independent spaces.

Five themes are presented: the experience of light, rays of light, light and sound, interactive light and starlight. Through a succession of varied experiences, visitors will be able to explore various sensations caused by light.

Outside the Villa, The Light House also offers a circuit of objects around the swimming pool and in the adjacent gardens. After-dark nocturnes are planned each month, as the outdoor installations are naturally designed to be visible at night.

Lastly, The Light House also extends across a number of other locations, adding a third and itinerant aspect to the exhibition. Networked with public and private partners, in Belgium and around the world, the project aims to defend the idea that culture is like light, the very essence of what takes us out of darkness.
