Envol | Calligraphy of light
Thursday 22 October 2020, from 6 to 9 pm

To mark the opening of the exhibition The Light House, calligrapher Julien Breton will present a series of calligraphies around the theme of light and art. Combining French texts with Arabic-style typography and Arabic words, the artist ‘paints’ with light. His art is composed of evanescent traces, ephemeral shadows and lights, movement, discipline and spontaneity.

The performance, lasting a few minutes, will be presented in the salons of the Villa Empain, in the middle of the exhibition space, along with the luminous works which will be there to discover at the end of the presentation.

Video engineer William Guignard has developed the technology that makes it possible to produce luminous calligraphy in real time in front of a transparent screen.

Julien Breton has been working for more than 20 years on calligraphy and on integrating it into the performing arts. After over a hundred performances in luminous calligraphy in different countries, he created his own Dance Company which evolved for 5 years around the encounter between dance and calligraphy. In 2019 he also joined forces with choreographer Amala Dianor’s Company for a show entitled Trait d’union (Hyphen) on this same theme. He also collaborates in parallel on various creations, exhibitions and shows with the Philharmonie de Paris, Art Dubaï and the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music in Morocco.
